One Problem A Day A solved math problem every day

Slope and Y-Intercept

Here's the problem of the day for Wednesday, October 27:

Question: Find the slope and y-intercept of 3x-2y-4=0.

Setup The Problem: Since we're looking for the slope and y-intercept, the easiest way to solve this problem will be to re-write the problem in slope-intercept form (y=mx+b). That means we need to get y by itself on one side of the equation, as shown here:

(3/2)x - 2 = y

The Answer: Flip that equation around and you have it in the y=mx+b form. The 3/2 is the "m" part (the slope), and the -2 is the "b" part (the y-intercept).
